Thin Space No. 44: Shifting Stance

The Question

How do you stand?

The Intention

Root down

The Meditative Moment

Be intentional about how you stand today. Feel your feet on the ground. Where’s the weight fall? on the ball of the feet? toward the middle? at the heel? Do you feel balanced as you stand? What’s happening with your ankles, knees, thighs, hips? Are they stacked? wonky? sore? What about your shoulders? Are they hunched? rolled back? open? uneven? Head up or bowed? Are you constantly leaning against things or are you standing firmly? Try not to judge yourself for any of your responses. But bring awareness to how you are standing. If there’s something you want to change, take a deep breath and shift. Notice any domino effects. Does shifting the weight from the balls of the feet to over the arches make you change how your shoulders are positioned? If you raise your head and pull the chin back, does it shift your hips? Everything in our bodies is connected: a shift in one place can change everything. Now consider what that might mean for the world.
